Children's Safety Centers® originated from the personal tragic need of the founding director. As a mother whose spouse was convicted of beating their six-year-old son with a board, she found herself living with her four children in a shelter for domestic violence victims. While struggling to build a new life for herself and her children, she was ordered by the court system to provide visitation between her children and their father. Realizing her children's instinctive need and desire to see their father, she developed the concept of a supervised visitation and safe-exchange center. Her desire to see the safety centers come to fruition was driven by the fact that regardless of the availability of a safe, supervised environment, her children were going to have court ordered visitation with their father. Instead of placing her children in a potentially dangerous situation, her solution was the creation of Children's Safety Centers®. A safe, child-friendly environment in which children could develop happy memories with their parent. The first center opened in St. Paul in 1993.
